Story behind the song
A couple of months ago I wrote "Divided (We All Fall)", on how this presidential race is tearing this country apart. This is about the same thing except more personal, such as between two friends, family members, co-workers, etc.
Lyrics
VERSE 1 What's left to say It's been too long It's been this way Who cares whose right or wrong We both have seen it coming From across the shallow chasm I find myself wandering Wondering what has happened Nothing but a dried out gorge Where the river used to flow We used to walk the shore But that was so many years ago CHORUS: Now we go our own way Let me know if I should stay It's so sad there's no more laughin' Now we stand across the chasm Now we know how much has changed The wind will blow followed by the rain It's so sad, all the rain comes crashin' Still not enough to fill that chasm VERSE 2: Who would have guessed Who could have seen As we progressed Away from how we had been They say that people change Lose their enthusiasm And yet it seems so strange To see you across the shallow chasm Nothing but a dried out gorge Where the river used to flow We used to walk the shore We used to know the way to go CHORUS: Now we go our own way Let me know if I should stay It's so sad there's no more laughin' Now we stand across the chasm Now we know how much has changed The wind will blow followed by the rain It's so sad, all the rain comes crashin' Still not enough to fill that chasm BRIDGE: I don't know if we can ever find that specialness we had I don't even know if we want it back so bad Nothing but a dried out gorge Where the river used to flow We used to walk the shore So many years ago CHORUS: Now we go our own way Let me know if I should stay It's so sad there's no more laughin' Now we stare across the chasm Now we know how much has changed The wind will blow followed by the rain It's so sad, all the rain comes crashin' Still not enough to fill that chasm We let pride get in the way Of ever saying what we need to say It's so sad we made our stand in Miles apart across the chasm I can hear the echo saying "goodbye" Saying "goodbye" Oooh, "goodbye".
